Pregnant Lady, Does Not Want To Work With Person Who Had MRSA. Chances Of Infection?

Hello, I am a manager of a small group home. I have a staff person who is newly pregnant, and saying that she does not want to work with one of our folks because this particular lady has a history of VRE and MRSA . I have explained that if she uses standard precautions she and her baby are at no risk of infection . However, I have a feeling that my word will not be enough. Can I please get an answer from you?

Hello,
Exposure to MRSA and VRE leads to infection in any person, and the risk is especially high in pregnancy. Standard precautions include frequent washing of hands, using a sanitizer, using gloves and masks wherever needed. In case of infection, the doctor should be informed of pregnancy as antibiotics like tetracycline are contraindicated in pregnancy. The baby may not be directly affected, but has the risk of infection soon after birth which can be dangerous. Taking all these into consideration, I suggest you to take an advice from your doctor as I feel it is not wise to expose the lady to the infected person. Take care.
