Hello and welcome to HCM
Tuberculosis is an infectioud disease caused by a bacteria called
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Lungs are the most common site of the infection. However, any organ of the body can be involved like brain, skin, bone
kidney,
uterus so on and so forth.
The infection is treated by a combination of drugs-
rifampicin,
isoniazid,
pyrazinamide and ethanbutol.
People who do not respond or develop adverse effects to these first line drugs are given second line drugs.
It is important to continue the drugs for the prescribed period without missing any dose.
Supplements have to be taken- Vitamin B 6, multivitamins and liver protective capsules. Two of these drugs are excreted by the liver so liver protective capsules are a must.
The duration of the treatment varies with site of the infection.
The treatment duration varies from 6 months to one and a half years. Specialist in this field ie Pulmonary medicine/ TB & Chest are well
versed in this field.
There is a regular updating of duration of treatment.
So, I would suggest you to stick to the regime suggested by your pulmonologist.
Investigations should/ will be repreated at the end of the treatment period to rule out residual infection or a relapse.
Thanks and take care
