Prescribed Hydrochlorothiazide For High BP, SVT. Is It A Combination Of Beta Blocker, Water Pill Combination?
My doctor has recently prescribed hydrochlorothiazide tablets 25 mg once per day, for high blood pressure and svt. I understand that this medication is a combination water-pill as well as a beta blocker. I had taken lopressor for this combination for years. Is hydrochlorothiazide usp the beta blocker water-pill combination ? It does not say metroprolol or lopressor on the prescription anywhere.
Hydrochlorothiazide USP is thiazide diuretic while Lopressor (Metoprolol) is a beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. While both are used as antihypertensives, they are two separate drugs and not in combination. If your doctor has prescribed you hydrochlorothiazide usp then your taking thiazide diuretic (water pill) only and not Lopressor.
However, Lopressor HCT is a combination drug of hydrochlorothiazide and metoprolol. You may consult your physician about the same.
Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg is water pill used for blood pressure, but if you have SVT and prescribed a combination of metoprolol and Hydrochlorothiazide. You should check the drug carefully as Lopressor HCT is combination of beta blocker and water pill.
If you are on beta blocker then suddenly taking off may not be good so please check with your treating physician to confirm your prescription and with Pharmacy to be sure it is right drug for you.
Hope this helps. Take care. Good Luck Dr.Akhilesh Dubey M.D.
