Purple Bruising On Torso And Ribs Area, Quite Large, Has A Lump. What Is Going On?

What could a possible cause of unexplained deep purple bruising on the side of the torso? My husband first had a bruise on his left side towards the last couple of ribs....this resolved itself. Now, we noticed a very deep purple bruise on his right side at about the same location as left one....it is quite large, about 5 inches by 3-4 inches and has a lump underneath.
