Recommend An Alternative Medication For Prednisone

My son is diagnosed with ulcerative colitis since last 2 years. He is taking Asaccol and currently taking prednisone to control a flare. However it seems like he is becoming prednisone dependent. What other medication can he try to alternate prednisone?

Hi.
Prednisone doesnot cause dependence. However being a steroid its long term use causes many side effects with common ones being weight gain , diabetes and hypertension. The dependence that you are saying might be the result of his disease responding to the treatment and him feeling generally better.
Iam sure once his disease has entered remission his doctor will gradually taper it off. But under no circumstances shall you suddenly stop the prednisone since that is associated with serious side effects.
Best Wishes
