He needs to cut down on his intake of fat and refined foods made of white flour, semolina and white polished rice. Give him foods which are rich in soluble fibre as it helps to lower not only
cholesterol levels but also keeps blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. Foods rich in soluble fibre are pectin containing foods like apples, guava, citrus fruits like orange, sweet lime and watermelons. Cereals like oats and oat bran is rich in soluble fibre and can be taken regularly for breakfast. Cluster beans, dried beans like
kidney beans, chickpeas, peas, ladiesfinger etc also provide soluble fibre.
Limit intake of fried, fatty foods, butter, clarified butter, margarine and prefer low fat milk and milk products like curd and cheese prepared at home.
If non-vegetarian, he must avoid organ meats, eggyolk and choose lean meat, skinless chicken, fish and eggwhites. Avoid rich gravies and oily curries.
Use not more than 2-3 teaspoons of oil for cooking and choose healthier oils like canola, olive, rice bran, soyabean and sesame oils to name a few.
Physical activity helps in lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels too. He must stay active and walk as much as possible for atleast 30-45 minutes 5 times a week.
