Hi, for pregnant of 9 weeks, do i have to take folic acid tables I.P. 5mg or can i manage this folic acid by diet? Iam concerned about the side effects of the tablet and if i can able to manage by diet, can you please recommend the balance diet to compensate folic acid amount. Thanks in advance.-Abdul Azeem.
Hello Abdul and congratulations, I suggest you get on your folic acid IMMEDIATELY. I wish all women of childbearing age would take a multivitamin so this doesn't happen. Folate prevents neural tube defect deformities and other problems. You ask about food. Folic acid is only available by pill and you cannot manage this by diet. If you had been in a folate repleted state when you got pregnant, that would have been optimal. Folate is available in some foods such as 1 cup of raw spinach, orange, peanut butter, milk, beef and raisen bran. Since you are depleted you need the folic acid. Just think to yourself that it is for the baby! Good Luck! Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
