Red Itchy Eyes, Red While Closing And Opening Eyes For A Short While. Putting Antibiotics, No Result. Suggestions?

I have had trouble with my eyes for the past 5 or 6 years. They are getting worst. Have been to the ophtalmologist who has prescribed various meds including ones for dry eyes. I am 71 years old. Nothing has helped. My symptoms are: red itchy eyes. WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES FOR A WHILE AND THEN OPEN THEM (as when I take a quick 20 min nap, they are as red as can be and itch. I wash my eyes twice a day, put various meds including Pataday and they are getting worse. Do I have a bacteria or virus lodged in my eyes. The symptoms do not go away and I do not know whether I need antibiotics by pill as I have also put antibiotics in my eyes and really nothing helps. Can you help me?

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
From your query i understood that you are suffering from Chronic red eye.
You are getting red eye because Blood vessels on white area (Sclera and conjunctiva ) are inflamed and irritated.
Have your blood pressure?
Hypertension may be a cause for your long standing red eye?
Open angle Chronic glaucoma may cause red eye . So please check your Ocular pressure with tonometer.
Idiopathic Uveitis ( inflammation of middle layer of eye) also cause red eye.

Some times vitamin deficiency can cause chronic red eye.
Vitamin C deficiency
Vitamin B2 Riboflavin deficiency
Vitamin A deficiency- not absorbed in Celiac disease- may be a cause for your red eye.
It is better to check these vitamin levels.
Simple topical antibiotics is not a treatment for all causes of redeye.
So you have to check all these to find out the unknown cause for long term red eye.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi, it appears to be the allergic conjunctivitis, and xeropthalmia as well. Probably you need to use medicines and injections for recovery. So i advise you to consult an ophthalmalogist for diagnosis and treatment.
I to my patient with such symptoms prescribe injections of vitamin A , tablets of vitamins, levocitrizine, montelecast, and antibiotics for few days. Thank you.
