Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 2.3 yrs old and he is severely constipated. Passes stools after 3-4 days. Cries a lot while passing stools. Facing this problem since Feb 2010. His diet has been good but the intake of water is less. Could you help me with the below queries: 1. How much water a 2.3 yr old kid should take in a day? 2. What should we do so that he passes stools daily? 3. How to regulate his bowel movement? The last medicine which we have given him was Laxopeg (1/2 sachet twice a day for 3 days). That helped but very little. Could you please suggest something which will help my son in overcoming this situation.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I understand your problem and treating constipation in a child need time and patient. First of all is important to have plenty of water maybe a total of 1.5 liter (you can alternate water, apple juice, orange juice, tea) but avoid sparkle juices. Also you should use a healthy diet with soup, vegetables and fruit (kiwi in everyday use helps) and should avoid fast food, snack, bananas. I understand that all this is not easy for a child but is important to have a regularly diet. Also use in his everyday morning fig jam, plum jam. You can help to increase his intestinal movement by doing abdominal massage from time to time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
