Hello doctor, one of cousin brother had seizures, following which he as admitted and later diagnosed with Neurocysticercosis. What is it? Is this infection common? How is it treated?
Neurocysticercosis is the most common parasitic infection of the Brain. Tissue-invading larval forms of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium cause the disease. The ova of the tapeworm are spread via the fecal-oral route.Neurocysticercosis is typically benign, and most lesions spontaneously resolve within 2-3 months; however, mortality is highly dependent on whether the disease process is simple or complicated. Management of disease includes management of seizures, increased intracranial pressure, and any other neurologic squealae of this disease. Maintainence therapy for seizure is undertaken. Please do follow the doctor?s advice in continuing the treatment. Improper Withdrawl of medicines can lead to recurrence of seizures.
