Severe Bruising, Swelling In Back Of Knee After Falling. Should I Be Concerned?
I slipped getting off a boat and fell with most of my weight on right calf/above back of knee 2 weeks ago I landed backward in the water. I had severe bruising which is starting to go away but the color is moving down my leg. Now the top of my calf below the back of my knee is very swollen and very uncomfortable. Should I be concerned? I am a 53 year old female. Thanks!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
From description it seems to be soft tissue injury .
You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.Beside elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
Hope this helps you.
Regards.
Based on the description, I feel that you have suffered a soft tissuehematoma. Generally, this will resolve spontaneously within 3 weeks (maximum). Please follow the below mentioned steps -
* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues. * Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours. * Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area * Elevation of the limb * Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications
If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, then you need a consultation with an orthosurgeon for a detailed workup and management.
Hope this information is helpful. Good day
