Severe Diarrhea, Bloating, Gas And Abdominal Cramps. History Of Being On Zofran For Ovarian Cyst With Vomiting. Can Doxylamine Succinate Be Given?

My daughter was seen in the ER for an ovarian cyst with vomiting. She was given zofran and a few hours later had severe diarrhea. It hasn't stopped in two days now, very watery diarrhea every hour and tons of it along with severe bloating, gas and abdominal cramps. The nurses and Dr.s at the hospital are convinced she has a virus along with her cyst. I disagree because I've been reading that zofran CAN cause severe diarrhea, bloating and gas. Would it be wise to try something else like Doxylamine Succinate?

Hello,

Thanks for posting,

You are right about ondansetron (Zofran) being a possibly responsible for her current symptoms but that should not be the only point of focus when it comes to digestive problems. Normally most medication side effects usually set off a few minutes to hours after initiation of drug. I must agree with you that zofran is the most likely cause and it is best if she stops taking it for now so her diarrhea can be put under control with oral rehydration and maybe antidiarrhea. She might require a stool exams too and blood tests.
You will also have to trust your doctors to do the right thing regarding your daughter's condition.

Hope this helps
