Severe Heart Burn. Taking OTC Drug Prilosec And Antacid. Indicative Of Ulcer Or Some Gastroesophageal Issue?
Hello, When I eat I have this burning sensation going to and begin when it hits my sternum and goes down in to my stomach. I have just recently started taking prilosec OTC and I am on my 5th day of taking the 14 day cycle and still feeling the pain which has subdued a bit since starting the Prilosec. But I am also having to take an antacid prior to eating IE: Generic Tums. It has been since Monday that this problem started, and again has subdued a bit, but still feeling discomfort. Prior to the discomfort I had a terrible case of heart burn, and could not locate any sort of antacid for close to 10 hours due various reasons. Just need to see if it is an ulcer or some gastroesophogeal issue that should seek immediate attention.
The symptoms as mentioned by you suggest that you might be having Gastro esophageal reflux disease, which is caused by the reflux of acid from stomach to esophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus. Investigation like endoscopy of upper Gastrointestinal tract will be helpful. Management consists of: 1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised. 2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. 3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole, etc. (which prevent acid formation in stomach)
