Sharp Pain In Lower Back, Knee And Hip With Inability To Extend Leg. Been Using Orthotics. Sounds Like Trochanteric Bursitis?

Hi, I am a 23 y/o female who is active and healthy weight. I am a runner, and I go to specialty running stores to get custom orthotics and shoes, which I replace about once every 6-8 months. I had a previous problem with my knee that neither a Sports Medicine doc or rheumatologist could explain. The other day I was out on a run, and it was rather cold. I noticed that, although my movement of my right leg is normally less than 100%, I couldn't extend my leg. I had severe pain in my lower back, hip and knee, as well as sharp pain in my first metatarsal. Google informs me that my symptoms point to trochanteric bursitis, but I can't see how that would explain the pain lower in the leg. I have also had small (1/2" diameter) unexplained bruises around the knee joint and foot.

Hi,

I read your medical history carefully and would suggest as following:

- consult immediately your orthopedist
- do X-ray and ultrasound of the hip to rule out bursitis
- measure the levels of uric acid in blood to rule out gout

I advise not to run or cause trauma to your injured hip, apply cold compresses and contact orthopedist as soon as possible for further evaluation.

You can send to me any picture of the bruising near hip.

All the best!
