I had a pacemaker replaced Thursday and Clindamycin HCL 450 mg 3x day was prescribed. I am getting strong heartburn with this medication. I had diverticulosis in the past most recently in 2015. I am not supposed to take aspirin. Should l be taking this Clindamycin? How can it be taken? Can I take it in a SMOOTHIE ?

Hello,

Yes, it should take with certain precautions. Based on the history you seem to have developed gastroesophageal reflux disease ('heartburn') apparently caused by the antibiotic Clindamycin as its one of the side effects. However, the heartburn can prevent by the following measures:

1. Swallow pills one at a time with a glass of water when sitting upright or preferably while standing.
2. Remain in an upright position for two hours after swallowing pills.
3. Stomach acid suppressant like pantoprazole can be taken to prevent heartburn or
4. A liquid form of Clindamycin if available can also be an alternate choice or it can be taken on a smoothie.

Yes, it may be continued if you do not suffer any heartburn after following the above listed preventive measures.
