Should I Be Concerned About Hard, Black Stool After Taking Milk Of Magnesia For Constipation?
I have GERD and have been taking a prescription for it. The last 2 or 3 weeks I have had it consistently. I have been traveling so I have been constipated. I took some milk of magnesia and had a hard bowel movement. What bothers me is it was black as coal and very thick, a second one was the same.
1) Black hard stool is because of constipation. 2) Milk of Magnesia is used to treat constipation as a laxative. 3) If patient is severely constipated then taking milk of magnesia for 1-2 days might not help to relieve constipation instantly. This is because colon is filled with large quantity of hard stool in severe constipation. 4) You should continue laxative support for few days in addition to rectal enema. Rectal enema act as stool softener and rectal stimulant in constipation. 5) Avoidance of high fat containing food and probiotics supplement are also helpful. 6) Generally patients pass 1-3 bowel habit with hard stool in severe constipation even after starting the treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
