Should I Be Concerned About Severe Cough And Breathing Problem?

I have been sick with what I thought was a cold, bad cough and trouble breathing. I would also cough up clear thick mucus. I was concerned and went the Dr and he put me on the z pac told me it was a cold that turned into infection because I am a smoker. It has gotten a little better but the cough fits continue. I have drastically cut down the smoking, but I am living on cough medicine, musinez and halls along with an inhaler just to get by. It is going on 5 weeks... SHould I be more concerned?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello
Thanks for your query.
From your history it seems to me that you are suffering from chronic bronchitis or more appropriately chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the background of chronic cough and sputum production with smoking history. The diagnosis of COPD needs to be confirmed by spirometry and it is essential for its staging also and appropriate management. Consult a good pulmonologist and get yourself thoroughly examined. Thank you.
