Should I Be Concerned For Having Long And Heavy Period?

Hello. I am 36 yrs old. My last period was heavier than usual and lasted 8 days instead of 5. Once my period ended, I had days here and there of light bleeding. I thought maybe I was pregnant, but have now started my period right on schedule. It is heavy again. Should I be concerned? Thank you

OB & GYN Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

About heavy and prolonged periods, like hormonal imbalance, there is imbalance between estrogen and progesterone, so as a result of imbalance the endometrium develops in excess. When it eventually sheds, there is heavy menstrual bleeding. It is seen in adolescence, and at peri-menopausal age. Other causes may be uterine fibroids, endometrial infection, like endometritis, thyroid conditions, liver, kidney and blood diseases, and if you are using any blood thinning drugs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sunita Kothari, OB & GYN Specialist
