Should I Be Referred To A Neurologist For Potential Surgery Given My Multiple Bulging Discs From L1 To L5, Leg Pain, And Loss Of Bodily Function?

Hello. I have confirmed multiple bulching discs in my lumbar spine through MRI imaging. They range from L1 to L5. I have multiple years of pain stemming down one or both legs to my feet. Also have loss of bodily function now. Should I be referred to a neurologist for surgery consideration? Curious as to why my general practitioner has not already referred me. Please advise.

Hello,

Oral analgesic medication will help relax muscles and reduce pain, steroid injections, physical therapy, massage therapy, hot & cold compress, gentle stretching exercises and exercise programs for weight loss. When nonoperative fails, minimally invasive surgery is suggested to relieve disc bulge.

If you are not responding to the conservative treatment and physical therapy programs than you are advised to get clinically examined by a Neurologist, get NCV test & required imaging tests done so that any developing neuropathy, sciatica or any underlying nerve disorder is detected.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
