Should I Continue Lo Loestrin Fe Despite Periods Continuing To Be Irregular?

I am in the middle of my fourth pack of LoLoestrinFe and my periods are still eratic. I started pack # 4 on Feb 14th and started my period on Feb 27 (just 14 days in) and I am still on it today (day 7 of bleeding). The month prior I started 4-5 days earlier than I thought I should and my period lasted 9 days. the month before that I started 9 days early and bled for 14 days. This pill is just not regulating me - should I give it one more month or go see my doc?

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello, and I hope i can help you today.

Ultra low-dose birth control pills like Lo-Loestrin frequently can cause breakthrough bleeding (meaning bleeding when you are not supposed to have your period) as a side effect. If you had irregular periods to begin with, the dose of estrogen in this brand of pill may not be strong enough to control your menstrual cycle.

Three months is enough time to evaluate the side effects of a birth control pill, so if you are still having breakthrough bleeding in your fourth pack, you may want to speak to your OBGYN about changing to another brand of pill that has a slightly higher dose of estrogen.

To minimize breakthrough bleeding, try to take your pill as close to the same time every day.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
