Should I Replace Both Hip Or One At A Time? Concerned About Its Recovery Time, Complications

Dear doctor,

I am a candidate for double hip replacement soon. My surgeon says that he will replace both my hip at the same time. At the moment I am a bit concerned about my recovery time and the complications. I have been debating against one at at time hip surgery or both at the same time.

Could you suggest which would be better and why
My age is 30 years male a bit thin.

Hi,
I would suggest you have one hip replaced at a time. This is a major operation needing a prolonged period of physiotherapy post-operatively which will be difficult to conduct if you have both hips operated on at once. Also, there is a possible need for a blood transfusion with a hip replacement. With both being replaced together there would be a greater blood loss which carries a risk. A bilateral hip replacement would be a long operation and, even though you are young, this would also be a risk.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us,

I have studied your case with diligence.

My suggestion will be doing staged surgery one hip first and second after 4days under epidural anaesthesia.
As total hip replacement is major hip surgery with more blood loss and morbidity .Also position need to be changed for 2 nd hip operation.
4 days gap will let body recover from hemodynamic imbalance.

I hope that I have answered your query. Let me know if I can help you further.

Take care
