Should I Stop Klonopin Intake When I Am Experiencing Very Poor Memory And Depression?

I take a milligram of Klonopin every day for many many years. I’m 72 and otherwise healthy except for a very poor memory. I’m also depressed. Should I stop taking the Klonopin? I take it in the morning with my other pills which includes 60 milligrams of Celexa, Enablex, lotril and vitamins.

Hi,

No interaction of Klonopin has been noted with the drugs, you are taking. More over Klonopin is generally used for symptoms of anxiety and Celexa for symptoms of depression. Therefore, your doctor might have prescribed you, both these drugs, as you already might be having mixed symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Of course, in a very few cases Klonopin may cause depression, but sudden withdrawal of it can increase your symptoms of anxiety along with other withdrawal symptoms. Therefore you may be needed for re-evaluation of your dose under guidance of your doctor / psychiatrist. Your doctor may increase / add or reduce / stop one or more medicines in a gradual increasing / tapering fashion for better toleration and favorable outcome. Moreover, memory loss is not a known unwanted effect of Klonopin.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
