Should I Take Celexa For Depression And Bipolar II Disorder?
Hello. I have been recently diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder. I have been prescribed Lamitcal and have been on it for almost two weeks. I have experienced sever depression and am wondering if I should take an additional anti-depressant like Celexa. History: I have been on some type of anti-depressant for over 18 years. I am a 34 year old female. I discontinued taking Celexa for two months and was feeling great. Rockstar great. Later I crashed. In retrospect is was discovered that I was experiencing episodes of hypomania. Then I crashed and become very depressed. I am almost two weeks in with the Lamitcal, and I will be upping my dosage soon. But I wake up with agonizing anxiety and vacillitate between flat affect and severe sadness and depression. I still have a large supply of Celexia. Should I include Celexia? I am exercising at the gym, doing yoga, eating healthy, journaling. I am trying everything to get well. I am open to suggestions. Please help.
You have depression for many years and are taking Celexa or Escitalopram for that. Then you developed hypomania and you were diagnosed with bipolar disorder. You were prescribed Lamotrigine for that. Currently you have depressive symptoms.
Celexa or Escitalopram is a SSRI drug and it has risk to result in Manic Switch, so most of doctors usually avoid using the drug in bipolar disorder. As per my opinion even if you have supply of Celexa don't start taking it.
Now for depression- Lamotrigine is a good mood stabiliser and it has very good action in depression also. The drug is also used in resistant depression. As you are going to increase the dose of lamotrigine so the drug will take care of depressive symptoms. There is no need to worry.
Other methods like you have mentioned like yoga, exercise, healthy eating will hasten recovery.
You have been diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder. You are on lamotrigine for that. Recently you have developed severe depression. You had episodes of hypomania and later depression. You are also having severe anxiety, flat affect, sadness and depression. Celexa is citalopram and the drug belongs to SSRI group of antidepressants. As you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder as per my opinion taking celexa in bipolar is not a good idea. Citalopram taken in depression with bipolar disorder may cause manic switch and will worsen the clinical condition. If depression is severe then you can consult your psychiatrist for other drugs like Lithium or Sodium valproate. Fluoxetine is also safe to some extent.
Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related queries
You are suffering from Bipolar Disorder and had depressive episodes for years and then you developed episodes of hypomania. You were taking Celexa for depressive episodes and stopped it some months back. Now you are on Lamotrigine for bipolar depression and the drug is a good drug with good efficacy. You have developed anxiety and restlessness and this is causing significant distress. Celexa is SSRI drug and this has potential to cause manic switch in bipolar patients and as per my opinion this should be avoided in your case. If anxiety is distressing then please consult a psychiatrist for proper treatment. For symptomatic relief medicines like Clonazepam, Etizolam can be used on SOS basis. Drugs like olanzapine in low doses can be used. The drug will help in mood stabilisation also.
Visit a psychiatrist for prescription of drugs.
Thanks, hope this helps you
