Should I Take Motrin For Shortness Of Breath Though Ultrasound On Heart Showed Normal Results?
My daughter that is 17 yrs old had a ultrasound on heart today doctor said it was normal heart but that she has to take adult Motrin every day for a month and to see him for a follow up fur to shortness of breath in lung chambers ? Iam not understanding whats going on .
Motrin is ibuprofen which is a NSAID. the purpose of giving this to her with normal echo of heart is only when there is a PDA. normally the drug used is indomethacin for this purpose. but recent studies have shown that ibuprofen is as effective as indomethacin for this purpose. but since the echo is reported as normal that means the doctor has not been able to locate the PDA on the transthoracic approach by applying color Doppler to the area between the pulmonary artery and aorta. a transesophageal echo would have been of better help to rule out the possibility of PDA. considering age 17 the doctor would have avoided that and instead given empirically given ibuprofen to see if there are any change in her symptoms. it is by far much more safer than indomethacin. so it's ok. trust the doctor for he is doing the right thing.
