Should I Visit A Doctor For Congestion And Cough Prolonged Over A Week?

Over the past month I have developed a bad cough with mild congestion and a runny nose. My cough is so bad it can make me shake and I have to stop what I'm doing or it wakes me up. When I cough, it sounds almost like a bark sometimes and occasionally I cough so hard that I have trouble inhaling again. Could it be a common cold or should I consult a doctor? It's been this bad for over a week.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my clinical experience, the cough with this intensity indicates underlying lower respiratory tract infection.
* I recommend to consult your doc for getting complete blood count, an x-ray chest for further treatment guidelines.

Wish you fine recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
