Should Insulin Be Taken After Dinner To Control Diabetes?
Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here... sir ma father around 60years of age.. has been suffering from diabetes from 4years.. recently he has been prescribed to take insulin after dinner.. is it convinent to take insulin after dinner.????
Hello there, I can understand that you are confused about the timing of insulin dose. Now there are different types of insulin and the dosing interval and before or after food depends on this type. There are insulins which can be taken at bed time which in your case is told to be taken after dinner. These are long acting insulins and usually help to control fasting and pre meal blood sugars.
Only insulins which are fast acting or premixed (fast acting plus long acting) need to be taken before meals as they target post meal sugars along with premeals if long acting component is added. Do discuss with your diabetologist about the type of insulin your father has been prescribed and I am sure your doctor will be able to allay your concerns based on the type of insulin prescribed. Hope this helps. Take care.
