My 13 year old grandson has been put on lamictal for 2 years . He start having mood swings every 6 weeks with inability to sleep ,impulsivity, leg cramps at night, irritability, increased energy. Originally he was put on Ridalin for ADHD. He was taken off the Ridalin in July. Now his Psychiatrist has up the dose of lamitical to 100 mg.. My daughter suggested to his father that her son should be taken of all drugs. That is when the Dr. Decided to up the lamictal.
Hello Welcome here. Your grandson has taken ritalin for ADHD in past. Now he has been put on lamictal for complaints of mood swings, irritability, impulsivity etc.
I would like to tell you that lamictal (lamotrigine) is a mood stabiliser. And it is usually given in treatment of bipolar disorder.
In children, sometimes its difficult to differentiate between bipolar disorder and ADHD.
I think the doctor has started lamictal considering your is having bipolar disorder.
In my opinion , you should continue with 100mg lamictal and keep regular follow-up with the doctor with details of symptomatic improvement.
I must tell you that lamictal can causes rashes all over body. If your grandson develops rash, you must immediately discontinue the drug and visit your doctor asap.
Hope this helps. Thanks.
