Should Levothyroxine Be Continued If TSH Levels Are Normal?
i am a 25 yrs female diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis ,on 125microgms of Thyronorm.I am now in the U.S. and have been prescribed Levothyroxin. I monitor my TSH levels regularly &it's within normal range. Do I continue with same dose of Levothyroxin?
You should know that the treatment with levothyroxine is long life in Hashimoto thyroiditis as it is a chronic and irreversible disease. If the TSH level is within the normal ranges, it means that you have found the right dose.
It is important to monitor the TSH level frequently (every 6 months) because this may change over a lifetime owing to various factors, for example, in some instances as we grow older the thyroid hormone requirement may decrease by 15 % or so.
So i would suggest to continue with the same dose and monitor TSH every 6 months.
Hope i have answered your query.
Best wishes, Dr.Mirjeta
