Should Lovastatin Be Avoided If One Has Diabetes?

My doctor has just diagnosed me as being diabetic, only just diabetic. She also prescribed using lovastatin to reduce my high cholesterol. Looking at the information on lovastatin it reads that if you have diabetes you should not take this medication. Is that correct?

Hello,
Your doctor has prescribed you Lovastatin which is cholesterol lowering agent belonging to group of medicine statins. In recent studies Statins does show the risk of increased risk of blood sugar but these are rare and benefits of statins on the heart far outweighs its side effects. So your doctor is worried more about your cholesterol levels and its harmful effects on heart. So trust your doctor.
If you come across any adverse effects apart from this then you consult your doctor about that.
Hope this is helpful.Take care
Thank you.

Hi
Lovastatin is a HMGCoA reductase inhibitor or more commonly statins. They are used to reduce cholesterol.
Statins have been associated with increases in HbA1c and fasting serum glucose lvels as are seen in diabetes.
So FDA has added diabetes warning to statin label.
This has occured due to the findings from the JUPITER trial of rosuvastatin revealed an unexpected 27% increase in new onset diabetes among patients randomised to the statin.
So many experts feel that these are reasonable and prudent recommendations. These problems are uncommon and do not diminish the importance of statins in cardiovascular protection. For vast majority of patients ,the benefits far outweigh the risks.
So I think that this answers your query and you discuss this with your doctor .He may advise you regarding its use ,the dose etc after thoroughly assessing your condition
