Should Memantine Intake Be Continued If The Patient Experiences Drowsiness And Weakness?
My 90 year old mother just started taking Memantine 5mg advancing to 10mg today. She has been on it for 7 days. She can not stay awake, is very weak and has no desire to eat. She was recently diagnosed with mid stage Alzheimers. Should she continue this medication?
Memantine can cause sleepiness and drowsiness. However other causes of such symptoms in an elderly patient should be looked for, like problems with glucose levels, sodium levels, uric acid etc. I recommend the memantine to be discontinued and follow up with your doctor for further evaluation and management.
Hope I was able to answer your question Please address any more concerns Regards, Dr.Lekshmi
