Should Prilosec And Amoxicillin Be Taken Together For The Treatment Of Ulcers?

Does prilosec work on it s own for treatment of ulcers, or do you need it in combination with amoxocillin? My bf does not have insurance and can t get to the dr. He has a script for prilosec and i think he needs to take it. His symptoms seem to reflect an ulcer, but i don t know if this will help on it s own or if there is something else he would need in addition. Thanks!

Hi,

Omeprazole (prilosec) will definitely help an ulcer to heal. Despite that if he's having Helicobacter pylori he will have to take a combination of antibiotics and Omeprazole (or other proton pump inhibitor) to achieve complete eradication.

If he can't afford testing then taking either Omeprazole or Ranitidine for a couple of months may suffice as a treatment for most ulcers. Be warned though that the symptoms may be the same even if he has more serious disorders like a tumor for example.

Functional dyspepsia is another entity that causes the same symptoms without an ulcer. Sometimes gallbladder disorders may resemble symptoms of peptic ulcer so if he doesn't get better then he'll have to find a way to get appropriate testing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
