Should Thyrox 50 Be Continued Now In View Of The Side Effects?

In Jan 2014 I had the TSH of 7.71 and the doctor prescribed thyrox 50 for a month. In Feb the TSH was 0.48 hence the med was changed to thyrox 25 but the same again went up to 4.71 in March and 6.4 in May. The doctor changed the dosage to Thyrox 50 again and the level has come down to 1.41 in July 2014. Should I continue with Thyrox 50 now? Further what are the side effects as I have high blood pressure now (150/98)

Hello there,
Thyroid when underactive the TSH levels will go up and so we need to replace the thyroid hormone from external sources. However it takes changes in few doses before an exact dose can be fixed based on how much of your thyroid is functional. Now TSH normal values may vary sloghtly from lab to lab but a value between 0.5 to 5.5 is usually normal. WIth Thyrox 50 that your TSH has come to 1.41 that seems to be your right dose. When TSH is normal your high BP cannot be attributed to thyroid medicines. ALthough thyroxine may cause some increased heart rate if at all your TSH was low there is no side effect of thyroxine as far as TSH is normal. I would say you need to continue the thyrox medicine.
However continue to check TSH levels once in 3 months or so to keep track as doses may need to be changed marginally for about a year till steady state is achieved.
