Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should A Cardiologist Be Consulted For Palpitations And Skipped Heart Beats?
I am a 65 year old women. I have suffered from hbp for over 10 years. I am currently taking atenolol 25 mg 1 x day & lisinopril 20 mg 2x day. Recently my bp has been running high between 160 170 / 90 95. Also suffering from headaches. Also, I have a heartbeat that skips & then doubles or triples it’s beat. Should I be seeing a cardio md? Currently I receive my scripts from my gp.
I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to cardiac arrhythmia (the skipped heart beats) and uncontrolled high blood pressure. For this reason, I would recommend consulting with your cardiologist and performing a cardiac ultrasound and ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring in order to investigate for possible cardiac arrhythmia.
Some blood lab tests are necessary too (complete blood count for anemia, thyroid hormone levels for thyroid gland dysfunction, blood electrolytes for possible imbalances). Making some changes to your current therapy may be needed (add new anti-hypertensive drugs and increase Atenolol dose).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka
