Should An Optometrist Be Consulted For Pain In The Eyeball?
I went to my optometrist this week. She said the optic nerve in my left eye is enlarged and have me a referral to an optometrist. I woke up this morning with pain in my left eye. I thought it might be a migraine so I took the meds. It has not helped. My left eyeball still hurts. Do I need to go to an emergency room? Or call the optometrist asap?
Yes, urgently go to an ER. If she meant optic neuritis you would get steroids for some time and this could be the first sign of MS which we need to investigate more. If it is papilledema that means the intracranial pressure is increasing and we need to bring it down. Please consult an ophthalmologist asap if you can or ER is also a wise decision.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Harshita,
Ophthalmologist
