Should Endocrinologist Be Consulted For Excessive Hair Loss After Thyroid Removal?
I had my throid removed in April of last year due to multiple large nodules. One of the symptoms that prompted me to see my family physician was excessive hair loss. I continue to have the hair loss. I am on medication and recently had blood work done to check the levels; however they were in the normal range. My mother had total alopecia when she was in her 70s, and thus, my concern. Should I see a dermatologist or an endocrinologist to see if there are reasons for my excessive hair loss?
Hi, I went through your query. Hypothyroidism is a common cause of coarse hair and hairfall. But since your thyroid hormone levels are normal this cause can be ruled out. Hairfall could be due to a number of reasons including nutritional deficiency, genetic causes, underlying serious disorder, stress, infection of hair follicles which are best investigated by a dermatologist. So I would advise you to consult a dermatologist. Hope this helps.
