Hello and welcome,

A blighted ovum is another name for a missed abortion. In this the baby ceases to grow inside the uterus and the pregnancy cannot survive. Sometimes it may get expelled out spontaneously and many times there are a few bits that are left inside. These may need removal by a D and C.

The best way to confirm this is to get an ultrasound to check for retained bits. If there are no bits then a D and C is not needed. If bits are there then D and C will need to be done.

Hope this satisfies your query.
