Should Sugar Consumption Be Reduced If Suffering From Diabetes?
hi i am diabetic type 2. i have been diagnosed for approx. 3 years. i always ate lots of chocolate and other sweet things until 6 days ago when i cut right down to one biscuit a day. but my sugar lavel is still 16.2. is this normal or should it have gone down considering the big reduction in my sugar intake?
Hello there, Your blood sugars depend on all the food that you consume in a day and not just on particular food items. For diabetics we generally advise to use food with low Glycemic index, which means that foods which will increase the sugar levels slowly and plateau rather than a sudden increase in blood sugar levels after eating the particular food. So when you eat chocolates and sweets, these are foods with high glycemic index and will increase blood sugars immediately to high levels. Reducing sugar containing foods in diet is the correct way to go. How much the sugar levels fall will depend on other food that you consume apart from these chocolates and sweets. Also your previous levels are not known so cannot comment on how much your sugar have gone down. However you need to continue the effort to change your diet pattern and you will definitely see a difference in your levels. Hope this helps take care.
