Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Should The Prescribed Dosage Of Escitalopram Be Decreased To Reduce The Side Effects?
My doctor prescribed escitalopram, 10 mg, for me. I have taken it for 4 days. I have had difficulty adjusting to it. I have dry mouth, feel off, and my blood pressure has increased. I weigh about 125 pounds. Should I cut back to 5 mg until I adjust?
It doesn't often affect blood pressure and anxiety or stress does. Cannot say in your particular case, but generally, the timing of problems would imply the cause.
Obviously, if the symptoms preceded taking the medication then the medication is quite unlikely to be the causes and being female, being low average weight is associated with having a higher blood level for a given dose of a medication.
Also, about 5% of the population doesn't metabolize this drug that well and higher amounts build up.
While serious toxicity is rare even if people purposely take large quantities of it, the less serious side effects are common and are usually dependent at least a little on dosage.
And, doses should not be adjusted without talking to the prescriber.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
