Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter of 14 years old has been suffering from frequent cold & respiratory problem. Dr prescribed her Medicine FORACORT ROTAHALER INHALER.It is steroid. What is its side affect? Should she continue this medicine throughout her life? As a mother I am totally confused. My daughter is gaining weight also. Is there any other alternative? Please guide me. My email address is : YYYY@YYYY
Thanks for the query. Foracort Inhaler is a combination drug which has two components: Anti-inflammatory component (Corticosteroid - Budesonide) and a Bronchodilator component (beta2-agonist - formoterol). It is used for bronchial asthma and Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease. The side effects of Foracort can be due to both its steroid component and beta2 agonist component. However, being an inhalational drug, the systemic effects are less. Some of them are - candida infection (thrush) of the oral cavity, hoarseness of voice, nasopharyngitis, tachycardia and palpitation(rapid heartbeat) and tremor (shaky or tense feeling). Hypokalaemia (low blood potassium) may occur sometimes. Long term use of Foracort Inhaler may cause adrenal glands suppression (which produce endogenous corticosteroids). Steroids can cause weight gain (inhalational therapy is less likely to cause the side effects)
It needs to be clarified, for what indication your daughter is taking the inhaler (asthma/COPD/non-specified). I would like to know, how often she requires the Inhaler or whether her symptoms deteriorate without the medications. You need to consult your physician for further advice on this matter, and performance of pulmonary function test if required.
Hope this helps you.
