Sore Throat, Hard To Swallow, Enlarged Tonsils With Burning. Watery Eyes. Causes ?

Good Afternoon! How are you? I have been having a few health problems that I would like to ask your intake on, Since yesterday my throat has been incredibly sore. It is hard to swallow and my tonsils feel enlarged. It feels as if my throat is burning. Also, whenever I eat or drink it tastes funny. My eyes have also been very watery. What could be cause of this? I would appreciate any advise that you may be able to offer. ALSO, I am supposed to give blood on monday, if I do get better before then is it ok to still give blood or will I be putting the future patient at risk?

thanks for your query.

History seems that you are suffering from acute tonsillitis.

Take any broad spectrum antibiotic like azithro 500mg once a day for 3 days.

Also take anti inflammatory like tab Chymoral forte, anti histaminics like Levocet.

Do antiseptic gargles.

Avoid blood donation this week, postpone it on next week whenever you feel better.

Many thanks, take care.

Hello dear,

First of all, it is advisable not to donate blood when you are having an acute infection. It will not be of any use to the recipient & may put him to further risk.

The symptoms as mentioned in your post indicate that you might be having Acute Tonsillitis.

Management includes:
1. Gargle with warm salt water to relieve throat pain.
2. Analgesics like paracetamol
3. Antibiotics depending upon culture & sensitivity reports to remove the causative organism.
4. Antihistamine preparations can also be used to provide symptomatic relief.

If symptoms still persist...it will be better to consult an ENT specialist.
Meanwhile...avoid taking cold food & drinks, maintain adequate hydration & take soft, non-spicy foods.

Wish you good health & a speedy recovery.
Thanks & take care.

ENT Specialist Dr. Vaishali Mehta's  Response
Good Afternoon,

You seem to be having an acute infection of tonsils. Sore throat, difficulty and pain while swallowing and fever are the usual symptoms. Burning sensation in throat could be due to an associated acid reflux.
I would advise you to do warm salt water gargles, avoid cold foods, avoid fried and acidic foods and take pain medicines like ibuprofen. If not better, you need to see an ENT Specialist to take a course of antibiotics. Better to put the blood transfusion on hold till you are completely free from the infection.

Good luck
