Suffering From Cellulitis In Right Leg With Diabetes,prostate Cancer& MRSA Positive

cellulitis in right leg (88 year old male) with diabetes, prostate cancer. Spots of gangrene on foot. He is also C-dif and MRSA positive. Treatment to date (since Friday) has been piperacillin and tazobactam along with vancomycin. They changed that to Zyvox. What is survival chances and what long term arrangements should family make

I notice that you are concerned about your recent infection with MRSA. Methacillin resistant staph aureus is a very common infection both in the community and in health care facilities and does pose dangers. Since you have MRSA and are being treated with appropriate antibiotics the prognosis for you is very good. As long as you complete all your antibiotics and follow up with your doctors.

Your family is at slight risk for contracting MRSA especially if they are changing the bandages and coming in contact with any bodily fluids from the wound. Your family can reduce their risk of infection by using protective gloves during dressing changes and washing their hands well with soap and water after contact.
