Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 20 month old son has had high fever for 3 solid days, only symptoms are mild diarrhea and one occurance of vomiting, no appetite and very sluggish. Temp reached a scorching 105.6 today and I was told by our doctor to go to the ER. ER doc cathed him and urine was negative. My question is, why wouldn t they run a CBC to check for signs of bacterial infection? He assumes it s a virus and we were discharged. Just curious.
Hello. Thank you for your question. I am sorry your son is not well. I have to admit I am at a bit of a loss here. I agree that the most common diagnosis here is a viral illness which is ultimately harmless. However, the ER's that i work with would not have let you go without a CBC and even a chest X-Ray. In all likelihood, these tests would be negative but I would have done them.My suspicion is your pediatrician wanted these done. A catheterized urine specimen could have been obtained in his office. I suggest you report this to your pediatrician so that he is aware and perhaps does something about it. Meanwhile, I hope your son's recovery is a quick one.
