Suggest A Decongestant To Relieve Head Congestion

3 days ago I went to the doctor with a bad sore throat and a bit of head congestion. I am on day 3 of a z pack. The sire throat is much better but I have such head congestion it is hard to move. I am able to blow my nose a bit so I suppose it is slowly breaking up. ANy suggestions for a decongestant to take? I thought the z pack would clear this up- Thank you!

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. As you are improving, intake of decongestant will fasten the recovery. The decongestants are of two types - natural and medicinal.

Natural decongestants are

- Steam inhalation - Daily steam inhalation 4-6 times will open your sinus and nose. After steam inhalation, you can blow your nose to clear mucus.

- Warm salt water drops - Two drops of warm saline water will decongest the swollen mucosa. You can use saline drops three times a day.

- To avoid congestion, try to take warm or hot food/drink. Avoid cold food/drink. Drinking coffee or tea will help a lot.
Garlic and apple cider vinegar also relieve the congestion.

Now coming to medicinal decongestants, you can take any of following drugs after prescription -

- Nasal sprays, like naphazoline, oxymetazoline, or phenylephrine.

- Pills, such as phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine.

- Antiallergic like cetrizine.

Hope it will help you. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
