Hello and Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' services,I have reviewed your query and understand you are looking for a diet to help you manage your
diabetes and
hypertension.Based on the limited information given, I would recommend a low sodium diet of 1500 mg/day to control the hypertension and
insulin resistance of the type 2 diabetes. I would also prescribe a controlled
carbohydrate diet with an emphasis on low glycemic load carbohydrates, the amount based on your weight goals. In addition, I would prescribe a high protein diet if there is no
kidney compromise to preserve muscle and visceral protein integrity in the amount of 1.2 g/kg/day. This type of diet could easily be made up in conjunction with a dietitian but is essentially a version of no added sugars, low sodium DASH type of diet high in lean
proteins and water soluble fibers and low in processed foods/meats/restaurant foods. More emphasis is place on fruits and vegetables in season, less on potatoes/white noodles/bread, more monounsaturated/polyunsaturated fats and fewer saturated fats. You are already exercising which is great! There are many personalized menu dietitians that would be happy to help you or perhaps you can make an appointment with one to go over your diet, but the prescription would be the same as what I just gave you: Low Sodium 1500 mg, Controlled Carbohydrate Low Kcal Diabetic Diet.Warm Regards,Kathy Shattler, BS, MS, RDN
