My daughter is 32 and has been having cramping and bloating off and on for the last couple of weeks. She said the pain is similar to what she feels a day or so before her period starts. She is newly married, has stopped birth control for 7 months or more and took a pregnancy test today. She is trying to get pregnant, but can t understand the cramping and bloating so far in advance of her period. Any suggestions to help her alleviate the symptoms?
Hello there, thanks for writing in. Bloating and cramping just before periods point to premenstrual syndrome which is an over sensitive reaction of the body to progesterone hormone ( hormone that is produced after ovulation). As ovulation is the main reason for these symptoms relief is generally expected by suppressing ovulation by using birth control pills. But these cannot be suggested for your daughter as she is planning pregnancy. Certain remedies like evening primrose oil , chaste oil, wild yam root have been tried but there is no evidence that these are effective and hence not recommended. Your daughter may try spironolactone, NSAIDS like ibuprofen and aspirin with the physician guidance for symptomatic relief. Water and salt restriction towards the end of menstrual period also helps. Hope this little bit of information is useful for you. Take care.
