Suggest Alternate Remedy For Neurodermatitis On Lower Legs

I am a 65 year old woman and I have been told that I have Neurodermatitis on my lower legs. Having seen numerous dermatologists plus my internist, I have been prescribed and used a variety of steroid creams, pramoxine, Aveeno, naturopathic remedies (Fluorosone, lavender oil, calendula, etc.), moisture creams, vitamin E oil, menthol, witch hazel, etc. I also take Zyrtec at night and Allegra in the AM. Benedryl doesn t agree with me - I get a crazed feeling when I take it. My itching waxes and wanes, but doesn t conform to any schedule that could be interpreted. I get temporary relief from every remedy, but the relief only last about an hour. The only thing that works for any length of time is a course of prednisone. The advice to stop scratching to cure the itch is ridiculous, since the itch is so bad I want to tear my skin. I had bad hay fever as an adolescent and young adult, but it disappeared after I had children. Do you think that allergy testing should be done?

You have an atopic diathesis and neurodermatitis is common in these patients. Do not use prednisolone orally as side effects at your age are unacceptable. You can use a potent topical steroid like clobetasol propionate and alternate it with tacrolimus 0.1% oint locally. in addition keeping the skin moist and hydrated by using a neutral soap and application of petroleum jelly after bath will reduce dryness and itching. You can increase the doe of allegra to twice daily and add tab monteleukast 10 mg at night
