Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Reactivation of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 DNA in the geniculate ganglion of facial nerve may be responsible for most cases of Bell's palsy.
I suggest that the combination therapy with prednisone (60–80 mg daily during the first 5 days and then tapered over the next 5 days) plus antiviral agents valacyclovir (1000 mg daily for 5–7 days) may be better than prednisone alone, especially in patients with severe clinical presentations,as with your sister-in-law ..
