The cure for ulcerative colitis is removal of the colon. This can be done a general surgeon or a colorectal surgeon. In cases of proven ulcerative colitis, total proctocolectomy with ileoanal anastomosis or pouch formation will cure your disease, and get you off all medications. However, if you have Crohn's disease, a colectomy will not be curative, and may cause more problems. It is very important that you see a gastroenterologist and get a definitive diagnosis before surgery.
I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
