Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM! I do appreciate your concern regarding to your mother in law. The symptoms you described should be do to the under active thyroid, the weight gain, the swollen legs, inability to walk, feeling sleepy ect. After starting the treatment it may take about two months to see improvement of the symptoms. If she has started levothyroxine from 4 months, you have to check the thyroid hormones because the dose that she is taking actually may be insufficient. Regarding the diet, in the under active thyroid there is no food that can improve it' s function. Just give the right dose of levothyroxine. Hope the information will help somewhat. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
