Hello Dear,
Thanks for reaching us.
Diverticulitis is a condition where the diverticula (pouches in the lining of the intestinal wall) are inflamed leading to a set of symptoms like left lower abdominal pain, fever with chills, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation or blood in stool.
If your mother has severe diverticulitis she needs a treatment in the hospital.
If it is a mild diverticulitis she needs treatment with antibiotics and diet plan.
The diet suggested initially for patients with mild diverticulitis is a clear fluid diet. She can be given water, broth, fruit juice without the pulp.
If there is improvement and a decrease in the above symptoms she can be given low fibre diet. Foods like cooked and pureed fruits and vegetables (like carrots, potatoes and beans) without peel or skin, white bread, pasta, low fibre cereals, white rice, noodles, egg, fish, milk, yogurt and cheese.
After a complete relief from the diverticulitis, she can eat fiber rich foods gradually.
I hope I have answered your question.
Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Thanks.
